How to Work In Design

Here you can find useful information inspired by our discussions on the podcast.

Study - Art Foundation.

One of the common themes from all of the podcast interviews so far is the ‘Art Foundation’ course.

Art Foundation is a 1 year course typically undertaken prior to University. During Art Foundation you’ll get to experiment with a wide variety of creative subjects from photography to graphic design, fine Art and 3D design.

Art Foundation helps you progress from a general education in Art and Design at school to specialising in a creative subject that suits your skills and passion.

All of our podcast guests agree that Art Foundation is invaluable. A course and tutors specifically designed to help identify your creative path. Not only is Art Foundation a useful step in starting a career it’s also one of the most fun years of education; playing and experimenting in creative subjects for a year. And Art foundation courses are free if you are 19 or under - What’s not to like?

Art Foundation is also a useful lifestyle step from school to University. An opportunity to experience higher education and perhaps stay local to home. (Although many students choose to study art foundation away from home).

New Designers.

New Designers is an annual exhibition taking place in London and showcasing University graduate work from around the UK. It is the perfect opportunity to research design and creative degree courses, meet the tutors, meet the students and see their work. If you’ve wondered what a design degree might be like - why not go and ask a student who has just graduated.

As well as the main exhibition, there is also a program of talks, workshops and practical advice from Design industry professionals.

New Designers takes place over 2 weeks.

Week one focusses on Fashion, Costume, contemporary Design Crafts, Textiles, Ceramics, glass and jewellery.

Week 2 focusses on furniture design, product and industrial design, graphic design, illustration, animation and digital art.

Even if you are not planning on going to University as part of your career journey, New Designers is a super useful exhibition for advice, networking and inspiration.

In July 2023 Work In Design recorded 2 episodes live at New Designers as part of their talks program. We’ll be back in 2024!
